History

Picture
Eight men at the University of Alabama founded the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity on March 9, 1856. Noble Leslie DeVotie, regarded as the Founder of the fraternity, was the first Alabamian to loose his life in the Civil War. Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been the leader in the fraternity world for the past 149 years. SAE was the first national fraternity founded in the South. SAE was the first fraternity to start a Leadership School for its undergraduate members in 1935 and the first fraternity to have a national headquarters building, located at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Sigma Alpha Epsilon has the most initiated members of any Greek-letter fraternity in the world with over 280,000 members and over 200,000 living alumni.

Ten men founded a colony of SAE at the University of South Carolina Upstate (formerly Spartanburg) on August, 12, 1998. South Carolina Beta became an official chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon on March 25, 2000. Sigma Alpha Epsilon has had a strong presence at USCU since the start. The men of SAE strive to live up to the ideals of our motto "The True Gentleman" in our relationships with the community, the university, and our fellow men and women. One of the most notable excerpts from the history of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the service of our members in the military. SAE has a storied history of military service dating back to the Civil War. Entire chapters enlisted in The War Between the States. In all, 369 SAEs fought in the Civil War. Over 8,000 SAEs fought in WWI and 18,920 served in WWII. South Carolina Beta is proud to carry on the tradition of service to our country.
